The Housing Opportunity for Persons with HIV/AIDS (HOPWA) program addresses specific housing needs to low-income persons living with HIV/AIDS and their families in Lake, Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties.
HOPWA offers assistance to clients in need of housing assistance—either to remain in current housing or obtaining new housing.
The HOPWA program includes several programs designed to assist clients’ specific needs. These include:
- Short-Term Rent, Mortgage, and Utility (STRMU) Services
- Pays rental, mortgage, and utility debts and dues.
- Can cover late fees and other penalties (Restrictions Apply)
- Permanent Housing Placement (PHP)
- Rent Security Deposit
- First Month’s Rent
- Application and Credit Check Fees
- Administration Fees
- Utility Deposit
- Utility Activation Fees
- Restrictions apply
- Supportive Services/Case Management
- Short-Term Supported Housing Assistance (Temporary shelter to eligible individuals)
For short-term rent, mortgage, or utility assistance services (STRMU):
- The household must already be housed;
- The household must provide proof of a recent short-term emergency situation that jeopardizes housing stability;
- The client must be named on the current lease or mortgage;
- Household member must be listed on the utility bill; and
- The household can receive only a maximum of 147 days of assistance in a 365 day period (other caps may be established)
